Napoleon IIIrd is James Mabbett, ‘boy-most-likely-to’ from the resurgent Leeds and Wakefield music scene. Formerly a member of Little Japanese Toy, Mabbett’s latest and most fulfilled incarnation has seen him touring the UK and beyond with his assortment of ancient organs and arcane tape-machines, battered brass instruments and a motley selection of adapted sonic toys and taped-up guitars. From these machines and instruments he makes an inspired psychedelic brew that celebrates creativity and damns the facile workings of pop culture. That said, Napoleon’s music functions first and foremost as an exciting new brand of pop music, and his remixing abilities are infamous – he’s turned his hand to reworking songs by ¡Forward, Russia!, Sky Larkin, The Cribs, and many others.
